Community — Youth Adelante

During the summer of 2006, the Chicana Latina Foundation partnered with El Concilio of San Mateo and Garfield Charter School to pilot a summer camp for middle school Latino students in Redwood City. The summer camp lasted five weeks and focused on math and science enrichment as well as recreational activities, fieldtrips and personal development. Fourteen youth who ranged from 6th - 8th grades participated in the program.

Overall it was a successful start towards an important focus area for the Chicana Latina Foundation. It has motivated us to work on creating culturally relevant programs for Latinas in middle school, in order to positively impact retention rates, while improving their skills in "gateway" classes, such as algebra, which determine success in college preparatory classes. We also look to impact other barriers facing Latina youth, by having presentations that address topics that are relevant to them and by structuring case management services for students and their families.

We will continue this work by starting, Youth Adelante, an after school program that will focus on math enrichment and skill building for middle school students in 7th and 8th grades at Garfield Charter school. In the future, we will implement this program in other schools that have high concentrations of Latina students.
