Youth Adelante After School Program
Youth Adelante (YA), under the auspices of El Concilio of San Mateo County and Chicana/Latina Foundation, is a family centered, culturally focused and community-based, Math enrichment program for Latino 7th and 8th graders. We aim to promote the academic, emotional and physical well being of the children we serve, while empowering parents to support their child's education.
We do this by offering math tutoring, study skills, critical thinking, and leadership development. We also offer other actives that develop cultural pride and social skill building. We have family meetings to introduce parents of our program to resources in their community and cultivate self-reliance in their ability to find resources for their families.
CLF hopes to positively impact retention rates for this population, while improving their skills in "gateway" classes, such as algebra, which determine success in college preparatory classes once they are in High School. We also look to impact other barriers facing Latina/o youth, by fostering leadership and critical thinking skills at an earlier age.
YA meet's three days a week during the duration of the school year. We currently run programs in Redwood City at Garfield Community School and in East Palo Alto at Ronald McNair Academy.
